We truly are what we eat . . . on a consistent basis.

I don’t think I’m alone . . . it’s so easy to eat badly, skipping meals, binge eating, consuming sugar/starchy carbs, processed meat, alcohol, caffeine. So many of us struggle with food choices, and with eating emotionally.

How does this apply to long distance runners?

Obviously, we ARE focused on our health and fitness. We’re disciplined. We have goals. We make sacrifices. We’re very aware of our bodies.

Yet many of us don’t consider how our nutrition throughout the week affects our athleticism and performance. I am not a nutritionist, altho I have studied holistic nutrition for my own needs. Eating a mostly plant-based, seasonal, fresh, locally sourced plethora of food works best for me. It keeps my gut calm, my energy up, and I have fewer issues on my runs! Many long distance runners have issues with ‘runners trots’ on the run. More do than confess it! If this rings a bell with you, find a nutritionist who can help you identify food sensitivities, and get your gut health in a better state.

When the gut is happy, it allows us to focus on our physical/energetic health (fitness), our mental health (grounded-ness), and our emotional health (acceptance).
